The Sun & Moon Together

At Bhaktiville, we are currently reading Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, on Fridays from 6:30 — 7:00am SLT (SecondLife Time / Pacific Daylight Time)

In Chapter One, there are summaries of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s pastimes during the middle period of His life. It starts with the expected traditional ritualistic openings and offerings, but rather than letting our eyes glaze over… what if we stopped and actually inspected them closer?

Wow!

There is some wonderous beauty hiding inside! Why don’t we savour them… stay a while… stop and smell the roses, as they say?

vande śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya-
nityānandau sahoditau
gauḍodaye puṣpavantau
citrau śan-dau tamo-nudau

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, who are like the sun and moon. They have arisen simultaneously on the horizon of Gauḍa to dissipate the darkness of ignorance and thus wonderfully bestow benediction upon all.

I offer respectful obeisances (vande )…

The standard opening for traditional Indian texts. It serves both as a practical ritual and a foundational philosophy. The concept is based on the state of mind perspective that one must be “more humble than a blade of grass” to access divine love. Starting with vande aligns the mind with this standard of humility.

to Lord Śrī Krsna Caitanya (śrī–kṛṣṇa–caitanya)…

As the sun, He is Krishna Himself, appearing with the golden complexion and in the emotional mood of His supreme eternal consort, Radha.

and to Lord Nityānanda (nityānandau)…

As the Moon, He is the incarnation of Balarama (Krishna’s elder brother), representing the cooling, merciful, and foundational spiritual master. The ending “au” indicates dual, or two. (You will see this ending throughout this prayer.) So this prayer is to both Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda.

simultaneously arisen (saha–uditau)…

Unlike the material sun and moon, which rise alternatively and can only dispel external physical darkness, the transcendental sun and moon (Gaura-Nitai) rise together and completely vanquish the internal darkness of the heart.

In particular, the five types of illusion or ignorance rooted in the material conditioning are:

  1. Bodily Concept of Life: Accepting the temporary physical body to be the eternal self.
  2. Material Sense Gratification: Making physical or mental pleasure the absolute standard of enjoyment.
  3. Anxiety over Identification: Being perpetually anxious due to identifying with temporary material designations (nationality, race, caste).
  4. Lamentation: Grieving over past losses or material conditions.
  5. Doubt in the Absolute: Thinking that there is anything existing independently or beyond the Supreme Absolute Truth.

on the eastern horizon of Gauḍa (gauḍa–udaye)…

“Gauḍa” refers to the ancient medieval name for Bengal region. By the 16th century, the region was under the political rule of the Bengal Sultanate.

Before the arrival of the Bhakti movement, Bengal’s intellectual life was dominated by a highly complex school of logic, dry intellectualism, and ritualistic Tantric or Smārta practices.

Society was stratified by strict rigid caste rules, where low-caste people and non-Hindus were spiritually disenfranchised.

Dispeling the darkness of ignorance, the sun and moon are rising on the eastern horizon.

the sun and moon together (puṣpavantau)…

Metaphorically, they are twin luminaries acting as one intense force – a spiritual renaissance.

wonderful (citrau)…

LIke a supernatural, wonderful event.

bestowing benediction (śam–dau)…

In previous times, conventional paths of salvation required a high-caste birth or rigorous asceticism. In the 16th century, from the “eastern horizon of Gauḍa,” a highly egalitarian movement arises offering salvation freely available to anyone, regardless of background, social standing, caste, gender, or past sins.

All living entities are included when Gaura-Nitai bestow supreme benedictions and good fortune. Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to freely distribute the highest goal of Vedic dharma: Kṛṣṇa-prema (pure love of God)

dissipating darkness (tamaḥ–nudau)

While in previous incarnations, Krishna and Balarama killed demons with physical weapons. In contrast, as the “sun and moon” of Bengal, they vanquished the “darkness” of the heart (impersonalism, material desires, and spiritual ignorance) with the weapon of Sankirtan (the congregational chanting of the holy names)
